Nothing is too hard for our God

Church bulletin for February

The acquiring of a church building for a small congregation is a challenge. How does a small congregation raise enough funds to acquire property in Sydney where real estate is amongst the most expensive in the world?  However, what is a building to God who owns the whole world, all the silver and gold and everything in the world? Is God able to provide this congregation its own building? We would say a resounding yes!

It would be good to consider that many have gone before us and act as a cloud of witnesses very much like the people of faith in Heb 11. Other congregations have needed a building like we do, have prayed like we do, have acted in faith and have seen God answer, sometimes in quite remarkable ways. Let us consider some examples:

A small congregation in the US needed a larger church building and was praying about this. One day a man sent by a wealthy businessman visited the pastor with a message. The businessman was giving them $1,000,000. He was not a Christian but had once sat under a Baptist church ministry and often drove by the church. They sold their small property, borrowed a small amount and with the donation they built what they needed.

Another small congregation in Queensland started a building fund after constituting as a church. Very soon after opening the account, they got a deposit of $50,000 from an anonymous person. They never found out who it was!

A small congregation in Sydney met in another church’s building. Due to dwindling numbers of the congregation that owned the building, the small congregation asked if the church would consider selling the building to them.  The answer was that they would sell it for whatever the small congregation could afford. What Christian charity, but also what a great God!

We could say like the writer of Hebrews that space would not be sufficient to tell all that God has done to provide church buildings to small congregations in need of one. Others have joined like minded small congregations with a church building who were at the brink of closing down and became one congregation …….. God is not limited in the sovereign, multitude and creative ways that He can provide for us. But what can we do so that we are acting and doing so in faith?

At the very least, we can be in prayer- at home and at church. But there are other things that we could do- keeping eyes and ears open (for churches that may have buildings no longer in use, properties for sale with potential for a church building), setting aside some money towards a building fund………

If you have any ideas or any information that would assist in our owning a church building, please let a member of the building committee know (the committee members are Phil [chair], Edgar, Florence, Isaac, Nyambura).
