Useful reading material

Church bulletin for September

I recently received in the mail a catalogue from Reformers Bookstore. I would like to recommend some books I have not yet read. These recommendations are made on the following basis: I have read other material by the author; the book comes from a reputable publisher; the topic is of much importance which I think will benefit people in church. Other books were also worthy additions to the list but I could only select a handful for the bulletin. I have included the blurb which appeared in the catalogue.

* Openness Unhindered – by Rosaria Butterfield: This book follows on from Rosaria’s autobiography “Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert”, answering many of the questions people pose when she speaks at universities and churches – questions not only about her unlikely conversion to Christ but about personal struggles that the questioners only dare to ask of someone else who has travelled a long and painful journey.

* God’s Battle Plan For the Mind – by David Saxton: Today, much of evangelicalism is either ignorant of, or turned off to, the idea of meditation. In God’s Battle for the Mind, pastor David Saxton seeks to convince God’s people of the absolute necessity for personal meditation, and motivate them to begin this work themselves.

* You Must Read – by various authors: Have you ever wondered what influences have shaped preachers, teachers and authors you respect? You Must Read brings together more than thirty well-known Christian leaders and gives them the opportunity to talk about a book that has made a lasting impact on their lives.

* Rules For Walking In Fellowship – by John Owen: John Owen supplies struggling congregations with Biblical guidelines for making church life in the present a foretaste of heavenly fellowship to come. He discusses both the responsibilities congregations have toward pastors as well as members have toward one another.

* Christ Set Forth – by Thomas Goodwin: Addressing, from an exposition of Romans 8:34, the pastoral problem that many believers stray in their faith by looking into their own hearts for signs of grace instead of looking away from themselves to Christ, Christ Set Forth is primarily a book written to encourage Christians

What are you reading at the moment? What are you intending to read next? Do you read anything at all? “You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them” – Ray Bradbury. Many Christians have embraced an impoverished Christian culture by reading poorly or reading nothing.
