Books on prayer

Church Bulletin

Since we have been looking at prayer in recent sermons I thought I would provide a list of books on this vital subject. If you want to learn how to pray you need to actually do it. Praying is the classroom of prayer. Having said that, there are many books which can help us along the way. They can be the means through which God challenges, stimulates, convicts, and corrects us afresh. I am of the mind that it is good to regularly read on subjects of particular importance. Prayer falls into this category.

With the selection provided, I have read some but not all. Those I haven’t read come recommended from reliable sources and I intended to read them. As with any book we need to read discerningly and though we may not agree with every idea on every page, it doesn’t prevent the book from being useful.  Obviously this list barely scrapes the surface but it does at least provide a starting point.

  • Yours is the kingdom by Gerald Bray
  • The still hour by Austin Phelps
  • Praying the Bible by Donald Whitney
  • A simple way to pray by Martin Luther
  • Enjoy your prayer life by Michael Reeves
  • Prayer by Tim Keller
  • Prayers on the psalms by David Calhoun
  • A praying life by Paul Miller
  • Hidden life of prayer by David Mcintyre
  • A way to pray by Matthew Henry

A prayerless church member is a hindrance. He is in the body like a rotting bone or decayed tooth. Before long, since he does not contribute to the benefit of his brethren, he will become a danger and a sorrow to them. Neglect of private prayer is the locust which devours the strength of the church – C.H. Spurgeon

No prayer! – no faith! – no Christ in the heart! Little prayer! – little faith! – little of Christ in the heart! Increasing prayer! – increasing faith! – increasing Christ in the heart! Much prayer! – much faith! – much Christ in the heart! Praying always! – faith always! – Christ in the heart always! – Alexander Whyte

May productive reading lead to productive praying.

Andrew
